Everyone hates pumping. Traveling with the pump, bottles and cooler… The annoying sound of the pump in the evening, and you can never wear a dress anymore unless it has a breastfeeding design. But I discovered that there are a few tricks that can make pumping more efficient and therefore less frequent. You will have to experiment a bit to see what works best for you and your body.
- Cut one mid-day pumping session and extend two others a bit and then measure the output for the day. You may be able to pump the same daily amount of milk with one session less. I was pumping three times a day (at 10am, 3pm and 8pm) and when I cut my 3pm session I still produced and pumped the same amount daily. What a relief! I wish I had discovered it months earlier!
- Buy new pump attachments. If you pump daily, your pump accessories need to be frequently changed. You may be able to pump more milk faster if you have new tubes, valves and plastic attachments.
- Make sure the pump attachments are the right diameter for you. You may be able to pump faster if you get a better fit (not too big or too small). A lot of pumps come with a standard 24 diameter attachment but it may not be suitable for everyone.
