Ok, so dream feed helped my daughter sleep through the night at three and a half months and helped get rid of her 4am feeding. She is 8 months old now and we seem to be stuck with feeding her at 10pm. At least it’s not 2am but still, time for the dream feed to go!
I read some advice online on how to drop the dream feed and about 3 weeks ago started to gradually decrease the amount of milk. It used to be 5oz initially. I started dropping an ounce every 3 days and increasing the day feeds by an ounce at the same time. I also moved the dream feed from 10pm to 9.30pm. Everything seemed to be fine until we got down to 2oz for dream feed and then my daughter woke up very upset at 12.30am and demanded her milk. No cuddling would console her so I ended up feeding her additional 5oz on top of 2oz I gave her at 9.30pm. The noise also woke up my husband who had to go to work the next day. So much for dropping the dream feed!
I was afraid to try it again and we went back to 5oz dream feed at 10pm. And my daughter was back to sleeping till 7am. This lasted for the past three weeks.
I kept feeding my daughter 1oz more at most feedings during the day and also started serving solid food three times a day (used to do twice a day before). And, suddenly, the last three nights she only ate 1oz at her dream feed. She is a bit sick so perhaps this is why. I also diluted the milk a bit following my neighbor’s advice. So there is hope that we will drop the dream feed some time soon! I will keep you posted.
PS I believe that some of the tricks that I’m trying could be used to drop any night feed as long as the baby is bottle-fed.
